Sharing Our Freshest Food

Stocking Community Fridges For Those In Need

Sharing Food, Building Community

Community fridges will be coming to Loudoun County in November, thanks to funding from a partnership with Microsoft and ChangeX! Community fridges, or “Freedges”, will be located in or near neighborhoods most affected by food insecurity. Refrigerators will be stocked regularly with surplus food from our donors and suppliers, and families can access the food as needed and without judgement. On the honor system, families will take what they need and leave what they don’t.

“Freedges” (as featured in NPR) have sprung up in major cities across the world, in response to the pronounced need and the significant amount of perishable food waste.

This community fridge program has been planned and implemented by Mobile Hope interns from Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and George Mason University with the supervision of Allyson Ruscitella and Wanda Moloney (Certified SAFE food handler) .

This project is part of the Microsoft Community Challenge, supported by the Microsoft Datacenter Community Development team to build thriving communities in Loudoun County, as part of their mission to contribute to long-term social, economic, and environmental health.
